Got a Sony DRU-190A and to be honest a little disappointed with it.

In the past, with my old writer (which was not dual layer) I could use unbranded Ritek G05 DVD-Rs with no problem.

With the new Sony drive I've found:-

    1. Only Verbatim DL DVD+Rs work. Every other type (like Aone) fails.

    2. Writing of single layer unbranded Ritek G05 DVD-Rs is very flaky. At full speed (8x) almost always fails. At 4x is a little better.

    Anyone else get this problem?

Is there anything I can do about it?

You could check for an updated firmware, that about the only solution for media incompatibilities. Aside from that, some models (Sony units are known for this) are very picky about the media they support. Either experiment to find media which works with that drive or get a different burner.

RITEK is considered crappy media to use. Use VERBATIM DVD-R media and see if you still have problems burning. What burning software are you using? IMGBURN is the best to use for burning dvd media.

I've got several of the Sony branded burners and no problems with any of them. But I also only use Verbatim DL and Taiyo Yuden SL discs. No coasters either in a couple of years with any of my burners. Maybe cheap media isn't such a good way to try to save money.

Your problem is trying to use inferior/cheap media.

Wish I'd known that Sony recorders were picky before I bought it. Never had any problems with Riteks and my older burner.

Also, I know some people have had good results with the AONE DL blanks but my Sony refuses to play with these....

The beauty on the WEB is the vast number of reviews available. Customer comments like at Amazon and full reviews, including media tests at CDFreaks/reviews, make life easier when trying to match burners to media.

Your burner is a Lite-on with Sony firmware.

the DRU-190A is Sony, and the same unit in Sony NEC Optiarc is the AD-7190A. Either way, it's a cross branded Lite-On DH-20A3P
