Long time reader, first time poster
I have a Mitsubishi WS-55315 RPTV (1080i native) using a HDMI->DVI cable. I've been using 1080i on a Philips DVP3960 for the last year with no problem with either DVD-Video or DivX .avi files. I upgraded to the DVP5990 (v31 firmware) so I can have USB instead of burning DVD-RW all the time. When I set the HDMI to AUTO or 1080i it goes into Auto-Recovery mode and switches back to 480P. I can only have 1080i if I start the movie and then switch to 1080i while watching. When I turn it off/on, it goes back to 480P. I've done some internet searching and it seems I'm not alone but I want to confirm this will be a problem before I just give up. You guys are the experts. :>)
Thank you in advance!

Mine does exactly the same thing. My 5960 once set to 1080i stayed there
but, the 5990 evidently will not. What I noticed was that if I had my TV on
and set to receive an HDMI signal, the 5990, when turned on, would play at 1080
so it does save the setting. Evidently it looks for something from the TV
and if it doesn't get it just switches to 480p
I have not upgraded to the firmware that is posted on this site yet because I just purchased the unit.
Maybe that will cure the problem.
I really like the unit, so even with this problem, I'm keeping it.
