The answer appears to be that some version can be hacked, and other versions cannot.

Welcome to the forums wraeththu, but note that Hollywood has gotten to almost all of the DVD manufacturers and made them stop producing models that can easily be made region free by consumers. To illustrate, at this time Samsung region locks every player they currently sell anywhere in the world and nobody has been able yet to get around it.

Although it does nothing for your specific problem, you might complain to the manufacturer if you can't make your player region free and tell them that you will NEVER buy another player from them as long as they remove this option from their players. It's only if the consumers revolt that you have any chance of modifying the behavior of the manufacturers.

Interestingly, we don't seem to have this issue over here, where there is no shortage of region free players and recorders.
