    Hi,

I am running out of space on my PC. I have a more important video project on hand.

I would like to compress my video file & then store it on external hard disk while I work on the new project.

How do I compress AVI file for future editing with minimal loss of quality using VirtualDub?

    Also, please see https://forum.videohelp.com/topic363811.html
I should have posted in the Newbie section.

    Appreciate it.
    Thank You

You don't, you buy a bigger HDD, then when it is full, buy another one.

What format are the files in now ? AVI doesn't tell us much of use - we need to know how it is compressed inside the AVI container. If it DV AVI then is already in the ideal state for editing, and should not be recompressed to another format.

The videos are already in the best format for editing. Choosing to recompress them to save space will cost you a quality hit not, when you re-encode, and potentially again down the track when you edit.

Keep it as-is, and keep your tapes and a camera to transfer with.
