I am unable to copy DVD into a disc but can do it into the hard drive. The burn message displayed burn success but the My Computer showed blank in the drive and DVD player software couln't find the copied disk in the drive. However, there is no problem to play the original DVD movie. If the burner cannot burn the disc but can copy the DVD into the hard drive, could it be burner defective or it is impossible for a defect in the burner?

It would be helpful if you posted what software you're using to burn dvd media. Also fill in your computer specs in your profile. What's the brand/model of the dvd burner that you have? What brand of dvd media are you using?

I used Nero and Roxio to test it. I do not know the build in burner brand name and it should be unrelated. The problem is if the burner is defective, could it only be unable to copy DVD into the disc but still could do it into the hard drive?

The brand of your dvd burner can be related. When you use NERO it shows the brand/model of your dvd burner. Or go through the NERO INFO TOOL which will show the brand/model of your dvd burner. What brand of dvd media are you using? DVD media brand is important and I think you've been around this forum long enough to know that by now.

I with LS that you're using terrible software.
For ripping dvd files use DVDFAB HD DECRYPTER then use DVD SHRINK. Then use IMGBURN to burn dvd media. Use those programs to backup your dvd discs. What dvd disc are you trying to back up?
Your dvd burner laser could be dying as well.

Is there anyone can answer the question directly? If the burner is defective, can it still be able to copy DVD into the hard drive or it will be unable to copy DVD into both of the disc and hard drive?

    No.
    Wait....Yes.
    Opps...I meant NO.

I'll have a go, but your question needs restating for clarity. :P

*Is it possible for a DVD writer to read discs but not burn them?*

Sure, if it was beginning to fail.

But in your first post you mention trying to copy a movie from "original DVD movie" to a blank. Movie? As in encrypted movie? Or not encrypted? If you're trying to do a direct copy of an encrypted movie, it would fail for sure unless you used something like AnyDVD or DVD43.

At any rate, Nero and Roxio have a long history of conflicting with each other. It may be that later versions are less of a problem, but it's still a bad idea to have multiple burning programs.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

Can you stop NO, Yes and then No here though you can play it in the kindergarten if you are good at it?
