I'm sure this has been asked a million times but I haven't found the answer I need. I have captured a 16:9 television program off my Directv HD receiver. It just happens to be from one of the lo def channels. Anyway, on my widescreen TV the program shows up being letterboxed and pillarboxed, even when directly viewed live. Is there a way to crop off the bars such that when I burn it to DVD it'll fill the entire sceen?

There is, but it also involves resizing the image up, which will reduce the quality substantially.

  3. Crop 60 lines off the top, 60 lines off the bottom (or some other combination that totals 120 lines). Resize what's left (720x360) to 720x480. Convert to 16:9 MPEG2. Make a 16:9 DVD. Since you're source is interlaced you have to use interlace aware resizing. The result will look blurry.

ConvertXtoDVD 3 might be the easiest way to do it. It has many presets that you can flip thru and preview. Your quality may take a hit but the results may suit you.
