Philips dvp 642 help?

I have two of these players and all was working fine, suddenly when I put in a dvd with xvid avi files the menue shows white circles with red ? marks near each file name. I'm pretty experienced with making or burning dvd's, so I'm not sure why this is happening.
any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm baffled as to why this has happened suddenly and does it on both my machines.

PS. these are avi files, not srt files.

Examine your files with GSpot. What codecs are being used? What container?

gspot says they are dvix files. could it have something to do with these ogg files?
DirectShow claims to be able to play the file. The following combination of filters were used:

The DVP-642 can't play ogg audio. Also, I believe "Ogg Splitter" indicates an OGM container that someone has renamed AVI -- not really an AVI container.

Oh, I see. Well thank you. I guess I will have to convert them to get them to play on my dvd player.

You can try the Divx test cd to verify your player is working properly:

I have an old DVP-642. It's one of the first and poorest performing (unfortunately true) Divx playback DVD players available. Every single one of the things listed in this sticky:

will be a problem for this player. It also performs relatively poorly with the Divx test CD. It can play more than half of the test cases, but it fails more of them than most other DVD players do. To make things worse for you, note that while you may not notice this, the DVP-642 does NOT correctly display any Divx file. It will stretch it slightly too much in the vertical direction, but again, you may not notice it. It also does not obey widescreen indications for Divx and shows all Divx files in 4:3 output. Should you try to "fix" this on either the player itself or your TV, it will not correctly stretch Divx to 16:9.

I more than got my money's worth out of this old player, but it has long since been surpassed by superior Divx supporting DVD players. The playback chip it uses for Divx playback is ancient and the only good thing about it is that it has a weird quirk where it can actually support the MP4 container sometimes, although you may or may not get any audio out of such files.

I think the 642 only really supports .mp4 files if they have an Xvid video stream and an MP3 audio stream, or if they're just an AVI renamed to .mp4. Don't feel like wasting a disc just to test that, though.
