This is probably a common problem, sorry I haven't been able to find a solution in the searches.

I have a 50min avi file of around 500MB and after editing a clip of about 5 mins resulted in a size of more than 8GB. I used Virtualdub for editing. Is this always the case and needs one to do some compression afterwards, or can this be avoided?

If you are just cutting/joining then choose Video->Direct Stream Copy and Audio->Direct Stream Copy and the file size should not increase. But if you are adding some filters then must you choose a compression if you want smaller file size, Video->Compression and choose a codec like xvid or divx. You are now saving it as UNCOMPRESSED video and that is huge.
