I got a message that the mencoder component needs to be updated/reinstalled...but I can't do it.
(I downloaded the newer version, "Locate" it and enter my password. Every time I get the error message "The installation was not successful. Improper use of the sudo command can lead to data loss... etc. etc.")
How do you do this?

Thread: Can't install outdated component

Perhaps you have special characters in your password, or you are not logged in with an account that has admin privileges? That could be a cause of a failed binaries installation.
I don't have a password (got tired of typing it when installing updates) and I am definitely using the administrator account (don't really *ever* use the one guest account).
The lack of a password is the problem. The installer tries to use the sudo command in the background. That won't work with a blank password.
Set a password for the installation. Change it back to blank afterwards, if you must.
