I have the same freezing problem on my 5990, unfortunately I can't fix it, and it's on like 1 out of every 5 movies I play. I wish there was a firmware fix for this but I've tried new firmware 4.1 and it still freezes. This is very frustrating. I'm using my usb key.

What kind of movies are you playing? Have you use anything like gspot or mediainfo to see if the movies match the playback specs (or more importantly, avoid the settings it doesn't support)?
    Have a good one,
