Blu Ray burner Question

I've been thinking of buying an external Blu ray burner, but before I invest so much money into it I would just like to get some opions from some other users.

1. I'm assuming the tech. for blu ray burners is fairly new. Would waiting 1 more year for more product/cheaper cost be a smarter move?

2. Is the quality of the burnt blu ray as good as the original?

3. Is making a copy of blu ray to blu ray as easy as dvd to dvd.

1) In my opinion costs are likely to lower in 1 year, but I don't personally expect massive discounts. Big drops in price could occur if either BluRay shows exponential growth in 2009 (not likely) or panic sets in and the big manufacturers slash prices to spur adoption (also not likely).
2) Assuming it's a 1 to 1 copy and not compressed from 2 layers to 1, yes, it should be identical to the original.
3) Not really at this time, but some software is in beta testing that may change that soon. Do note that a "DVD Shrink" equivalent for BluRay that is being tested requires you to own AnyDVD HD for BluRay ripping. That's currently about 80 Euros a copy. We're still waiting on free BluRay ripping tools to arrive.

Right now, the latest Pioneer model still only burns single layer discs, while I can buy DL 50GB discs in my hypermarket. I would suspect in a couple months Dual Layer burners to be available. Thats what I'm hoping and waiting for anyway.

Alright it sounds like instead of forking over $400 for an external burner it would be wise to wait it out just a bit longer. Thanks for the info everyone.


oh and hey 1 last question. Is it possible to combine blu ray disk to just one. And what I mean by this would be like take a sopranos blu ray that clearly doesnt use all the capacity blu ray offers and instead of doing disk to disk burn would it be possible to combin say disk 1 and 2 to just 1 burnable disk?
