This may be simple, but am new to vdub. I am trying to take several small avi files and combine them into one file, as well as cut sections out of large avi files and paste them into other avi files. Is this possible with vdub. if not what program is recommended.

  2. Yes, it's possible, but all the AVIs you expect to join have to have the same properties - codec, resolution, audio format and bitrate, sample rate, etc. Since it sounds like you're combining a bunch of unrelated videos my guess is that you can forget the idea unless you're prepared to reencode them so they do all have the same properties.

If all the vids meet divx home theatre profile and have abr or cbr mp3 audio, you can use DivXMediaBuilder to combine them into one .divx file with a menu that will enable you to select any for playback and if you start from the first will play through all. You will need divx codec installed. the .divx file will play properly in DivX player and windows media player.
advantage- the files need not match in resolution and audio bitrate as long as they meet divx home theatre profile
disadvantage- no way at present to extract any but the first avi file from the divx file.
