Formatting DVD+/-RW discs on Recorder

I have a Sony DVD Recorder model RDRGX700.
I am trying to record from the recorder with some RW+ & -RW discs, but the recorder does not recognise the discs. error message says, 'Disc Error'. Normally i could go to the disc informaton section on the recorder to format the discs to work, when i get this message, but this is greyed out. These are on new discs, such as JVC, TDK. they work fine on the PC.

would be grateful for any help.

Full format on the computer, then go back to the recorder.

Thanks for the tip. I can only do a 'quick format' on my software and cannot find full Format. I have Roxio Easy Mediar Creator. I see the option of a 'full erase' which i have tried, but still does not work. is this the same as a full format. can i do a full format via MS DOS prompt. if so, do you know the command.
