any constructive suggestions what I should do with my basic black box that conked out on me? Is it worth finding someone to fix it? Should I try to sell/give it away "as is" so some handy person could fix it for themself? Or just trash it?
This is the kind of macro-buster box that uses 9 volt battery, and works from vcr to vcr or dvd recorder.

Open it up and see if there is any obvious defects. In particular, check the battery connections and the input/output sockets. Those devices are very simple and there isn't that many parts in there. Look for swelled can capacitors (electrolytics) as those commonly fail with age. They are easy enough to replace. But considering the original price of the boxes, not worth professional repair.

If you don't see anything obvious, look around on Ebay for a replacement, or consider upgrading to a TBC that can do quite a bit more than a sub $20US box.
