what software for sony hdd camcorder

hi all
m8 has a newish sony camcorder with the hard drive, not sure which model,
but hes looking for easy to use software for converting holiday films on camcorders hdd to dvd discs
may want to do a little editing of the films (just cutting bits out)
any suggestions on what software he should get,
wants something simple to use,

I know both the latest versions of Premiere and Vegas support HD video. Vegas is cheaper and, IMHO, has an interface that's easier to learn.
