M2TS files - can I convert them ?

I know these files come from a Sont camcorder, and its driving me a bit crazy trying to convert them down to WMV (for example).
I'm trying to find a free convertor but seems like I have to pay for an app that does this.

I even downloaded Vegas home studio 8 but that will not import M2TS!

Is there something free out there, -- or is there something out there that will convert and edit at a reasonable price ?

I guess you need Vegas 8.0c if you want avchd m2ts support.

But if you just want to convert to wmv an avisynth script maybe will work, with directshowsource("video.m2ts") and install ffdshow and haali medias splitter, and import it in for example wmnicenc. You can also open the avisynth script in some editors like virtualdub.
