I opened it with avidemux and is working fine. but it asked me to rebuild index eveytime I open a file. I also notices that it's not as powerfull is VIrtualDub, as it seems to be halting and crashing. is there a way I can use the file with VirtualDub.

Update!
I can open the videos now with no problem,
I had to go to ffdshow/VFW configuration/ decoder and set xvid to libavcodec, it worked fine.
when I re-installed xvid because I need it to compress some files, the problem came back.
any advice?

Install Xvid before installing ffdshow. Or use a filter manager to de-prioritize xvid. Radlight Filter Manager, Filmerit, etc.

I have installed both manages and tried to reduce the merit of the Xvid DirectShow filter,
The issue still exist. -

I used filerit, DirectShow Filters, Xvid MPEG-4 Video Decoder and set the merit to 00200000 Don't Use.
am I doing it right?
thanks -
Sorry, I forgot you are having problems in VirtualDub. That uses VFW filters, not DirectShow filters. So changing the priority in DirectShow (via filter managers) won't make any difference. The only way I know to set the order in VFW is by installation order -- the last one installed is the one that's used. I would uninstall both Xvid and ffdshow. Then install Xvid and install ffdshow. Make sure you enable ffdshow's xvid decoder via its VFW Configuration option.
