  5. Update Xvid codec. Try a different MPEG4 decoder -- Divx codec, ffdshow...

I opened it with avidemux and is working fine. but it asked me to rebuild index eveytime I open a file. I also notices that it's not as powerfull is VIrtualDub, as it seems to be halting and crashing. is there a way I can use the file with VirtualDub.

    regards

I actually have both of these installed, is it possible to have these conflicting and causing this problem?

Disable xvid decoding in ffdshow(under video decoder configuration->codecs and set xvid to disabled) and then reinstall latest xvid codec.

I did this but it didn't solve the issue. I unistalled xvid and the file did open with VirtualDub. My favorite codec is xvid, does this mean I can not use xvid?

    I appretiate your help.

I just downloaded virtualdub 1.8.6 and re-installed latest Xvid and the problem came back.

    what to do?

  12. Looks like your HDD recorder's MPEG4.2 encoder is incompatible with Xvid's decoder. Set ffdshow's MPEG4.2 decoder at a higher priority than Xvid's.

    Update!

I can open the videos now with no problem,

I had to go to ffdshow/VFW configuration/ decoder and set xvid to libavcodec, it worked fine.

when I re-installed xvid because I need it to compress some files, the problem came back.

    any advice?

    regards

  15. Install Xvid before installing ffdshow. Or use a filter manager to de-prioritize xvid. Radlight Filter Manager, Filmerit, etc.

I have installed both manages and tried to reduce the merit of the Xvid DirectShow filter,

    The issue still exist.

Did you reboot? You have to reboot before the new merit becomes effective.

I tried the reboot, but it didn't work

I used filerit, DirectShow Filters, Xvid MPEG-4 Video Decoder and set the merit to 00200000 Don't Use.

    am I doing it right?

    thanks

  19. Sorry, I forgot you are having problems in VirtualDub. That uses VFW filters, not DirectShow filters. So changing the priority in DirectShow (via filter managers) won't make any difference. The only way I know to set the order in VFW is by installation order -- the last one installed is the one that's used. I would uninstall both Xvid and ffdshow. Then install Xvid and install ffdshow. Make sure you enable ffdshow's xvid decoder via its VFW Configuration option.
