Blu ray to .mkv. looking for top quality

I plan on backing up all my movies to .mkv format for storage on my htpc.

i have a projector that displays 120" so I'd like to backup my movies 1080p, I'm expecting the file size to be around 10gigs.

I just want the best way to do this, I don't care how long it takes as i do them overnight, but quality is a must.

If possible, i would also like a way to burn these to brd and use them in my player, if the change ever arises. do any players support h-264 .mkv files?

Use megui or ripbot264 if you want something easier(click on them for guides).

If you mean blu-ray players then no they don't support h264 mkvs. Only some media centers and htpcs supports mkvs.

The are both front end GUI's that use the same x264.exe for the back end.

The ending quality will depend on a number of factors including what settings you use, filtering & preprocessing, source quality, etc...

I like XVID4PSP but I've also successfully used megui but never used ripbot264

I would say use XVID4PSP and select constant quality with a quantizer of 18. That should give you great quality.

I use RipBot264 v1.11.5. This is the latest version and will get you "highest" level of quality that you are looking for. Quality is only as good as the profile you use to encode the video. I would use the default profiles first and then "tweak" the settings slightly to your liking. I burnt many hours testing out different profiles and settings and the default profiles on RipBot264 will be about the best obtainable quality. Don't go insane on the bitrate...trustme... for a htpc I would set it around 8000 with 1920x1080 resolution. I use 6860 with 720 resolution for my Apple TV and when comparing the original frame with my ne compressed one...I cannot see any difference. And I very picky!

forgot to mention... anything that uses "x264" to encode the video is the only way to go...

Ripbot264 and Megui both use x264.

Hello!

I want to rip a Blu-ray into mkv. I have all my blu-ray files (m2ts) and others, riped to my HDD. I have been downloaded RipBot264 version 1.12.0. Everything is ok but I wonder, if any of you guys managed to rip a blu-ray disc into mkv with RipBot264 in a reasonable amount of time?

What I mean is... For the first test, I put a small m2ts file ( about 48Mb ) just to see the resulting mkv... after I press the Start button, the encoding process begins, but It takes about 22 hours to finish It is normal? I found this unacceptable, that means an entire blu-ray disc will be finished in about a mounth?

PS:My PC is a AMD XP 4000+ Dual core with 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD and Windows Vista Ultimate.
