I am new to video cleanup, and have learned alot from this forum - thanks!

I am working on a VHS capture using VirtualDUB, and I am having problems with what I call red "flicker". Areas of solid red will flicker between red and purple. You can see this in this screen shot:

Is there any way to fix this once the video has been captured?

As I mentioned at the start, I am new to this, so if you suggest a specific filter, please suggest what settings I should use.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

  2. Try the VHS filter in VirtualDub.

I have the flaxen VHS filter.

However, I do not know which of the parameters fixes my problem.

    Any suggestions?

I seem to recall the default settings do a fair job of removing that kind of chroma noise.

  5. That looks like an NFPA placard. Are you transferring Safety videos?

I just transferred all of ours...

Yes - it's a training tape on identifying hazardous materials.

I am doing this for a health care company that provides home health aids and Nurses.

They have a bunch of other VHS training tapes that I am transferring to DVD for them as well.

This is chroma noise. It must be removed in hardware, with a good VCR.

You can DL a "short" 2 second sample (90 MB) at: http://www.pfredd.com/misc/test.zip

The problem is with the red diamond in the hazard placard. It flashes between red and purple.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  10. Ouch! Those bright purple flashes are beyond what the Flaxen VHS filter can fix. The normal chroma noise can be mostly eliminated (like in the red patch before the purple flashes start) but bright purple will have to be fixed in the analog signal before capture. Smurf can probably make recommendations for that.

For those who don't want to downlaod the whole video here's a crop slowed down to 2 fps in animated gif:

yeah, but does that play that way. I mean. Maybe its part of the video. I'm on dial-up, and 90mb is way out of my leuge.

also..and what is the vcr make/model you're using, and what capture card (dv, hardware mpeg, or pci) and what codec are you using if pci card. need more info on how you obtained the video, from tape to hdd.

To me this definately looks like macrovision, I had a commercial music video tape that had the exact same flashes and same color.I tried a couple of those "stabilizers" and they were horrible and actually made it worse.I ended up getting a cheap avermedia dvd maker gold pci card because they ignore macrovision and it worked perfectly.

  13. Safety tape gets play again and again and again, is used for new employee hazing.

So, the tape has too much wear and tear and drop out. Try a new safety tape.
