I FINALLY got a Philips 5990 and love it.

I have a few questions though:
    1) Is there a multi-region hack for this? Its a 5990/05 (region 2) unlike the 5990/37 and all the other versions that maybe out.
    2) Is it easy/safe to do? Can I mess it up if done wrong?
    3) Are there any other file types that are playable that I might not know about yet?

btw. me FINALLY getting it is because of this thread

This region free hack doesn't work?

    http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/philips-dvp-5990/9370

It's just a few button presses on the remote.

My 5990 quits responding with some divx files. The files should work unless its the variable bit rate spikes but it always quits responding as soon as the video is loaded. I can't turn the player off without unplugging it. Has anyone heard of this happening?

    Hi!
I'd like to buy this player but I have a question.

I'd like to ask you if this players can read DVD DTS audio tracks.
I'll connect this players by the coaxial output to an external receiver able to decode the DTS digital signal (the Creative ddts-100).
In this mode i can listen the DTS audio?

I suppose that I can't listen DVD DTS audio tracks in analogic mode (because it hasn't a internal decoder), but I can listen the DTS tracks from the external receiver in digital mode. It is correct?

    Thanks for your help

When I play WMV files through a USB flash drive it plays ok but when I try to fast forward it more than 8x speed the picture freezes and slowly forwards after 10 secs then freezes then slowly forward again and so on.....

Its fine when I fast forward AVI files.

    anyone know why?

It happens only with WMV's, not sure why. I guess the only solution is a firmware update

It could just be a quirk of the WMV format. I've seen people encounter WMVs in which they cannot scan through properly (fast-forward/rewind) fairly often; are you able to do that with no problems on a computer? (Not use the player's location bars to jump to a different position in the video, but actual FF/rewind.)

What happens if you 'fix' the WMVs with asfbin (including the fix to properly cue through the files) and then try playing them through the USB stick, again?

Does the same problem exist if you burn the files to CD/DVD and play them from there? It could also be that the USB setup on the player isn't fast enough to handle the files 100% correctly. (There have been instances reported of even AVIs being handled not as quickly or correctly on players with USB ports, as opposed to playback from data CD/DVD.)
If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?
