I'm attempting to rip a DVD to my HD but upon playback (ripped or playing from disc) it has blocky black and white distortion at the top of the screen (see screenshot). How do I rip and eliminate this? I've tried 'letterbox' etc on my usual ripper (Xilisoft DVD to DivX ripper) with no success. Thanks!

Since it's on the original DVD like that, you can't get rid of it during the decrypting, but only when reencoding to AVI, DVD, or whatever the final format is. The overscan of most TV sets will hide it if this is for DVD.

Letterbox should get rid of it. I don't know why you're having trouble. I don't think you want Letterbox anyway as that covers both the top and bottom with black, and judging by the picture, there's no black on the bottom. I'd use Crop followed by AddBorders if for DVD, and Crop (of the top and the sides) followed by a Resize for AVI.
