i actually just bought a dvd player- Philips DVP 5990 +dvix +usb with external 160GB external HardDrive. my player won't see anything after i connect the HardDrive. i have videos in avi format file in folders, plus other junk on the HardDrive such as some software files and documents and so on. do i have to have only avi files onthe HardDrive for my player to see any files or is there another way to do it. my HD is FAT32 formatted. am i doing something wrong. my player does recognize my external HardDrive, but when it pulls up the menu for usb, it shows blank.

    thank you

format your drive using SwissKnife http://www.compuapps.com/download/Sw...swissknife.htm

mine works fine with WD pasport 250GB (over 120 movies)

and this link for custom firmware

yes, i did indeed read the forums and reviews, but that didn't answer my question at all. my drive is already fat32 formatted, but my main concern was can i place other junk on it as well does that effect the fact that HD won't be accepted by the player because of it recognizing other data on the hard drive instead of just videos files.

thanks for a quick reply, did your videos work with default firmware while other files and software on the HD, or was it after u updated to vb6rocod firmware..

    thank a bunch...

i just pluged it in before turning it on and after turning the player on, it picks it up but still no video files or any folders shown. thanks for all your help.

From the same thread MJA linked to: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic355675-90.html#1894706 I used that method with Swissknife and the other programs to be able to select any of the videos with just the remote keypad. Windows can only make 32GB FAT32 partitions, so a different formatting method needs to be used.

As far as having other files on the drive, shouldn't matter. But you could test that out with most any USB thumb drive. I would put non-video data in a separate folder, so you don't have them all though the menu. I would also try reformatting the HDD with Swissknife and you may find it works.

all my videos (DIVX) worked fine with both firmware.

Not sure what you are asking in the last post, but the US version of the 5990 plays PAL format Xvid/Divx with no problems.
