I just moved to Europe, and would like to find a player that I can play Region 1/2. I been reading about the Philips 5960, but would like to have recommendations. Looking for HDMI as well as my TV will support that.

    Thanks for feedback!

Search the threads for 5990. You'll find a few with hacked firmware (longer filenames, different skins, etc.). For example:

Be sure to the the version that's right for your player.

In the recent past just about all Philips DVD players could be made region free, but we're getting a lot of reports about players sold by them in the USA that don't have working hacks any more. Be careful on any Philips purchase as it's possible that the hacks may not work now. You'd need to be sure that you can return the player if you can't change the region on it.

Oppo (http://www.oppodigital.com) makes some highly regarded players that can be made region free, but they aren't cheap and you'll have to order one through the internet. They claim to be able to run on European power, so with a plug converter that would seem to be an option for you.

Well this is good information as I was about to get the Philips. Considering customer service is a term non-existent here, I am not sure how good they will be in letting me return it. I will check.
