  1. I know what finalizing accomplishes, but what actual changes are made to the DVD?

    I've noticed that the finalizing time varies somewhat depending on how much free space is left on the DVD and I wonder if the finalizing process essentially writes over the free space?

    It doesn't fill the entire space, however there is a minimum size that needs to be written - 1GB from memory, and possibly only if you are writing as UDF - so writing very small discs can seem to take a longer than necessary.
