I have a Toshiba that plays avi files and it has stopped working so i went to bestbuy and looked to see if they had anymore. Well I am not sure exactly if the ones I looked at do. Most say DVIX on them. Here is the ones i looked at with links

I'd recommend the Philips. In fact, I believe this exact model has a very lengthy thread in this forum (DVD & Blu-ray Players).

Of the models listed I would go with the Philips model. Recent past models made by Philips have more or less proven they can do DivX/XviD well and this model can be made region free easily and does PAL to NTSC conversion.
Hard to beat for the money although a better DVD player can be bought (such as the Oppo Digital models).

The past two dvd players I owned were Phlips. Each lasted only a year and a half, at most. The chipsets just burn out. I purchased the toshiba sd 6100. Seems to work nice. I do not know how to make it region free, but it plays Divx, and that's all I really need. We have the same model at work for nearly two years and it going strong. The one thing I do notice about the Toshiba is the loading and unloading of the disc is VERY SLOW...

I've had Oppo for a while and it is pretty good plays everything, reads off flash drive too (that's why I bought it) the only complain I have it takes a long time for the tray to come out. I got a good deal from Amazon.

Best buy has Philips 5990/5992 refurbs for $35 with free shipping now. There is also a much improved firmware mod for the 5990 (there's a big thread here somewhere). Philips DVD players aren't great DVD players but the Divx support is probably the best (in their price range) at this point.

None say "DVIX" on them !
However if you want to play avi files why not look at a media player like the wd hd tv? why have one file on tap when you can av 30 or 40? Other media players exist ..and if you are set on the DVD player, the Phillips is quite good, Altho Toshiba would be worth a look.

Actually, I believe that the Philips IS DivX Ultra certified. I won't have my 5990 until tomorrow but I will try to verify it then. Here is an article from DivX's website saying that Philips is certified (http://investors.divx.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=297537).The big thing these days seems to be finding something that will play newer container formats like MKV with High Definition files in them.

RabidDog was being facetious. No DVD player is "DVIX" certified -- the OP's misspelling. Yes the Philips DVP 5990 is Divx Ultra certified. The box it comes in indicates it too.
-
Just remember to copy down the DivX VOD registration code if you plan on upgrading to the modded firmware. The code isn't visible after the upgrade.
-
I didn't write my VOD code down. Can I get it by reverting to the factory firmware? I'll probably never need it anyway.
