when i try to play a video in vlc player it starts to lag

If your specs are right, 256mb might not be enough memory, and your processor might be too slow

If the file is large or high bitrate, or uses a more complex codec like h.264, you need a faster CPU to decode properly

It might be that your video is using an obscure codec that even VLC has problem decoding

You can use mediainfo (view=>text) to find out information about the video

Really, without more information nobody would be able to answer your question. What are you playing? If it's a high Def or highly compressed like a MKV rip of a Blu-Ray video with a filesize like 25Gb, VLC may have problems.

Or it could just be a messed up video file that VLC is struggling to play.

What lags? The video or the audio?

The format is determined by the codecs used. What audio and video codecs does the file have and at what bitrates? Easiest is to post a Gspot screenshot of the video. Blank out the titles if wanted. One guide for screenshot posting: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic271697.html
