I have a video clip, about 15G, that is MPEG-4 AVC. I am trying to make regular DVD, not blu-ray, out of it. The problem is I can't find any tools to convert it to mpeg2.

I have tried AllToAVI but it crashed when the converted video was even less than 1GB. Can anyone suggest me what I can do?

Try ConvertXToDVD or the freeware FAVC. If you have the same problem, maybe the file itself is corrupted.

You could also try demuxing the audio from the MKV and dealing with each part independently. Try MKVExtractGUI.

FAVC said unable to process my .mp4 file.
I can't open my file in MKVExtractGUI because .mp4 is not supported.

Can you play the mp4 in windows media player? If not it wont work in favc. Install haali media splitter and ffdshow.

    Or use ConvertXtoDVD.

See if you can open it with DGAVCIndex, it'll create an index file as .dga, which you can then make a text file with Notepad and save as yourfile.avs
Example: w/o knowing your file specs..Start Notepad and type this sample text

    LoadPlugin("C:\dgavcdec100a32\DGAVCDecode.dll")
    AVCSource("C:\yourfile.dga")
    Lanczos4Resize(720,480)

Save as .avs and close Notepad

Make sure to point LoadPlugin to where you installed dgavcindex, and to location of yourfile.dga
Now load that .avs file in FAVC and process...try it,and good luck!

Oops! I just found another problem. My source .ts file is 15.7 GB. In convertxtodvd I selected 8500 GB and it seemed it couldn't fit everything in so part of the end was cut off. I need to either split the file into two parts or find a way override the size limit in convertxtodvd.

You mean 8500 "MB" right? Try setting to DVD-9 8200 MB

    Yes, 8500 MB :P

But the problem is DVD-9 is still not enough to hold the produced dvd because before I use custom settings, I did pick DVD-9.

ConvertxtoDVD is not one of my fave tools,in fact it's at the bottom of my toolbox...FAVC is my preference, however since you're having probs using it, try by splitting your .ts file with tsmuxer using the split&cut feature..then convert each section with CX2DVD if you must....

AVI DeMux lists AVC as an output Codec, so I assume it can read it too. You might be able to use it to resize, cut to length and encode to MPEG2 in one program.

I tried tsmuxer and cut the file into myfile.split{1,5}.ts files. Then when I opened myfile.split1.ts in ConvertXtoAVI, it seemed to recognize it was coming from a big file and actually converted all 5 files together. So I am back to ground 0, part of the video to the end was cut off. I tried just open myfile.split5.ts and convert only that, ConvertXtoAVI gave me some error messages but still converted the clip except I couldn't open VOB file at all.

I then tried FAVC route. DGAVCIndex does open my original .ts file and create a .dga file for me. I created a text file, .avs, like this:
    LoadPlugin("D:\Video_Editing\DGAVCdec\DGAVCDecode.dll")
    AVCSource("D:\olympics\myfile.dga")
    Lanczos4Resize(720,480)

Add this file in FAVC and click on Create DVD and get an error message:
FAVC is unable to process the following files:
    D:\olympics\olympics.avs
Generally this problem occurs when the correct version of AviSynth is not installed (v.56a or greater),
or the corresponding codec is not installed........

This is frustrating but I will try AVIDeMux

That's what I did. I put olympics.avs in the same directory with the .dga file.

Just save it to your desktop...
Open with Notepad>click File>save as> tick desktop, type in file name olympics.avs and save...Now you should have olympics.avs on your desktop...use that in FAVC....

Start over, providing your script is correct, start Notepad and type this again,

    LoadPlugin("D:\Video_Editing\DGAVCdec\DGAVCDecode.dll")
    AVCSource("D:\olympics\myfile.dga")
    Lanczos4Resize(720,480)

Now while still in Notepad ,click File>save as> tick desktop, type in file name olympics.avs and save...Now you should have olympics.avs on your desktop...

And btw, here's some reading for you..

Followed the instruction but no go

In the meantime, I tried AVIDeMux to the point that it said:
H.264 detected .... and asked me whether i want to use save mode of not. If I select Cancel, it crashed. I am trying "use safe mode" not. But it also said that safe mode may LOST FRAME ACCURACY.... ummm...

EDIT: crashed on safe mode as well.
