Following the victory by Blu-ray in the high definition content war we have seen a slew of new Blu ray products to hit the market during the past 6 months. One of them is the Panasonic DMR-BW500 which is the first 500GB dual tuner Blu-ray recorder in the world outside of Japan.

    Uh-huh. Very nice unit.

Leaving aside the ridiculous cost of the machine and its media, and that even the author notes a hard drive HDTV recorder at a fraction of the price is a better deal and equal quality: the only way the USA will ever get a BluRay recorder is if DirectTV, Comcast and Time Warner all go out of business simultaneously. The market for any sort of recorder here will remain at zero for as long as integrated HDTV PVR rentals are available from cable and satellite vendors. Australia does seem to be a much hipper place electronically: they get the most interesting toys outside of Asia!

  6. Says its 1.1 profile but non-upgradeable.. still, only a fool or a desperado would buy the first iteration. And I just went out and bought my first SD recorder.....

The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

  7. I don't know about that first generation stuff. My first gen DVD recorder from 7 years ago still works. I've been through more than a few others since.

I can think of a million better ways to spent $2100 than buy their BR recorder. That article was a good laugh.

Everyone must have just arrived on earth in the past year.

The first DVD recorder from Panasonic was $3500. My first one was a Panasonic DMR-E10 that was an open box item for $600.

You can't even buy a recorder with a hard drive anymore, other than the cheap junky ones. As with everything, in two years the price will be a lot lower. So will the media.

The idea of comparing the price of new technology to old technology is ridiculous.

  12. That's the one, the E10. I paid $1000 for mine new and it still works. Total what I've spent on recorders since and it's a lot more than that. None of them have lasted anywhere near as long as the first one.
