Is there any way to decompress an AVI file to the source?

It may sound illogical still I want to know.

Do you mean somehow magically reverse the compression and increase quality? If so, the answer is no.

Compressed .AVI's have quality irreversible lost.

But you can decompress to a much larger YUV file.

Why do you want to do this?

  4. Every time you play an AVI file the audio and video are decompressed for display. Many programs, like VirtualDub, can decompress the audio and video in and AVI then save them in an uncompressed AVI. But as others have pointed out, you don't get the original quality back. You just get a bigger file.
