So I went to use DVD Shrink 3.2 to edit a dvd like I have for the past 4+ years, and when I went to back it up, it was only encoding @ about 2500KB/s (and taking 20+minutes), instead encoding @ 24000+KB/s (and taking 3+ minutes) that it has been since I got this AMD dual core PC. I tested it on several different movies and all were encoding at the slower speeds? Any ideas what just all of a sudden made the encoding process totally slow to a crawl?

~ I have tried deleting all the files in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\DVD Shrink folder.

~ I have defraged the drive that I use for backups.

~ The files are already ripped to the Hard drive, so it's not DMA/PIO mode problem, ripping is working fine as normal

~ The box within the DVD Shrink preferences marked Run analysis and backup in low priority mode to improve multi-tasking is UNCHECKED

~ I'm not running deep analysis

~ I've uninstalled dvd shrink and all it's files (then ran CCleaner). And re-installed DVD Shrink 3.2 and the problem still exists.

~ I've run Spybot, McAfee, CCleaner, Windows Defender and no malware/adware was found.

I have no idea why just out of the blue it now in codes so slowly

Ok so I went and looked in the Device Manager and found that my 3rd Secondary IDE Channel was stuck on PIO MODE. So I uninstalled the driver and re-installed it and all is good?

I didn't think it was a PIO problem only because I thought that only had to do with dvd drives and and hard drives (Learn something new everyday.)

So luckily I've got it back to normal again.

could be it's transcoding, is the movie over the size limit for a single layer dvdr? shrink is much faster when just copying out the files if it's display bar is under the 4.35GB limit and it runs in that mode at 60,000KBs on my system between 2 separate drives.

it could still be the drive(s) in the wrong mode even though it's already ripped, or possibly a dying drive which can slow the whole system to a crawl.

you are correct, but since shrink is reading and writing to the HDDs during the encode process, PIO mode will slow things to a crawl. switching to SATA drives speeds up the process even more!
