    Is there dynamic range compression in the VLC player? How is it activated and controlled? Thanks!

    Yes, I second that wish. I often watch video in a noisy environment, and this is sometime excruciating to have to change the volume all the time...

  3. Settings -> Preferences

    Tick Advanced Options in the bottom right corner

    Then go to Audio -> Filters -> Volume Normalizer

    Thanks for the hint, but I'm looking for DRC and not volume normalization (which is quite different, and doesn't suit my needs).

    The KM Player, which I use more often than VLC now, does have a Dynamic Compression filter

    Too bad, got a mac. =\

    I also found out, that what I am looking for may be "automatic gain control" actually... Still looing into it.

    I want to make loud parts of the movie quieter and quiet parts louder.

    This is want dynamic range compression in audio means, as far as I understand.

    AGC is realtime and evil IMO. Too much pumping.

    I think what you want is "audio compression" which in the audio context means dynamic range compression, not bit rate compression. All AM raadio stations rely on dynamic range compression.
