Handbrake & iDVD

Hi all,

I have a wedding DVD that i authored a while back using iDVD. I now want to add some things so basically I want to get back the movie files from the DVD, add some content and then create new menu's etc with iDVD.

I tried it last night using Handbrake. I used the standard settings but changed the bitrate to 4000. I imported tham into idvd, made the menus etc on iDVD and started to burn to a .img file.

My problem is that its taking AGES to author the DVD, 60 hours it is quoting for a 7gb DVD. This is FAR longer than it took originally when I imported the files from my DV camera, into imovie and then into idvd.

So what am I doing wrong? Am i using the wrong settings in handbrake? Is there any other program for mac that just rips the original DVD video without encoding it?

iDVD wouldn't had been my first choice.
Had you had a copy of DVD Studio Pro,
you could have simply put the DVD into the Mac,
used MpegStreamclip to demux the main
title back to elementary streams, and then
using DVD Studio Pro, import those streams in,
create your new menu, add new content , and been
watching the thing in less than 2 hours tops*!

What I would do if I was in your shoes, would be to:

Use MpegStreamclip to trancode the main VOB file back
to DV Stream.

Import said Stream back into iDVD.

Create new menus, etc, add new footage, etc, and then
author new DVD.

it will take a bit, because for all intents, your starting over again,
but iDVD was originally choking on the ripped output from Handbrake.
This gets it to a more likeable (for iDVD) standard, and gets you on your way.



* this based upon remuxing the main feature, and
muxing any new content, under 30 minutes long,
using a Dual 1ghz PPC G4 machine, naturally!
