Sharp BD-HP20S does NOT play BD-R/BD-RE ???

Hi All,

I have a Sharp BD-HP20S blu-ray player. I think it is the same as the BD-HP20U.
The manual says it will play BD-R and BD-RE. But the question is "BD-R or BD-RE with what kind of content?"
Does anyone have experience playing BD-R and BD-RE in this player? What kind of content and filestructure do you use?

I tried blu-ray with BDMV filestructure, but that didn't work.
What other kind of filestructures would be useful to put on a BD-R or BD-RE and play in this player?

If you don't get any help here (we're not the best website for BluRay questions), you might go to the forums at http://www.doom9.net and ask there. They have a lot of European members and people with very strong BluRay skills.

Sharps don't play BD-R/RE. Don't know why...they just dont. PB of burnable BD media is optional for player manufacturers. I think it sucks that they state it differently on the box

That might be true... Can you advise the burn software to be used in this case?

With TsMuxer I created a BluRay filestructure.
I tried ImgBurn 2.4.1.0 and Nero 8.3.2.1, both UDF 2.50.

I tried BD-RE with BDMV, with and without CERTIFICATE folder.
I tried BD-R with BDMV with CERTIFICATE folder, straight from TsMuxer.
Sofar without any luck.

The player say "can't read disc" or "incompatible disc".

Any suggestions?

The writer is a LG GGW-H20L (from myself) and a Pioneer BDR202 (from someone else).

The BD-RE I used are from Sony, TDK and LG.
The BD-R I used are from Verbatim
All single layer discs, but that might be obvious... :wink:

I haven't tried all the possible combination in contents, drives and discs..... there might be a chance that I missed the working combination

Just to share my experiences, the Sharp BD-HP20 can play BD-R or BD-RE just fine, so long as they are in BDAV format, and 25gb single layer discs. Also, only MPEG2 is supported, not AVC.

I found that Cyberlink PowerProducer Ultra 5 is the best consumer app to create a Sharp-compatible disc. Using my LG internal blu-ray burner, I have burned many BD-RE's with this software and they all play back flawlessly on the Sharp. (I have only tested Mitsubishi brand BD-RE 25Gb media, which are similar to Verbatim I suspect)

Cyberlink PowerProducer can import divx/xvid, mp4, wmv, etc. directly but not mkv container format. In this case, just use the freeware TSMuxer to convert the mkv to TS or M2TS, which are directly supported by Cyberlink.

Please note that programs like Nero 8 or 9, etc. which author in BDMV will not work, since the Sharp only supports BDAV, not BDMV.

Some alternative apps for BDAV authoring to mention are Ulead DVD MovieFactory 6 Plus (which is less versatile than Cyberlink as it can't import T2 or M2TS files) , TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress, or TMPGEnc MPEG Editor 3...

(TMPGEnc DVD Authoring Works 4 is not a viable option as it only supports BDMV)

Also consider upgrading to the latest firmware for the Sharp BD-HP20.

PS: Just to clarify my above post, although Sharp BD-HP20 does not support AVC/H264 on a BDAV BD-R/RE, the Cyberlink PowerProducer 5 Ultra software *can* import videos with H264 video codec. It will automatically convert the source videos into the (MPEG2) BDAV format that the Sharp finds acceptable...

The trickiest source files are those with DTS soundtracks. I guess you would need to convert them to AC3 or MP3 first, I haven't found any easy way to do that yet. So I just watch these videos on my PC with AC3Filter instead of attempting to burn them.

Also, I haven't been able to consistently import videos with AC3 5.1 audio into Cyberlink (even though it is supposed to support dolby 5.1). The videos are recognized, but sometimes there is no sound on the authored disc.

The only solution has been to use AVIDemux to convert the AC3 soundtrack to something else, like two-channel MP3. I also suspect that AC3 stereo would work.
