I personally only have a new 32 inch crt tv. Now my backups made with dvdshrink look very good viewed on this tv. Last night while house sitting for my in-laws I played my kids backup of "Cars" ( compressed with shrink using main movie only and one audio track) on their 42 inch HDtv Flatscreen and holy cow it looked like crap. All fuzzy and no detail.
I just bought the 32 inch tv about two months ago and I don't plan on getting an HDtv anytime soon but I will certainly start using DVDrebuilder for my backups solely from now on to prepare for the day when I eventually will get an HDtv.

I use DVDrebuilder along with CCE SP although it does also work with HCenc. It does do a nice job.
Sometimes I'll use VobBlanker first to remove stuff. Also MenuEdit is a nice way to remove menu buttons of stuff that no longer exists. For instance if I remove all the audio options (other than 5.1 English AC-3) then I use MenuEdit to delete the buttons for the other languages so they can't accidentally be selected when they aren't there. Same thing with the "extras". If I leave some but delete others then I remove the button(s) with MenuEdit.
Makes for a nice "crashless" final disc structure
BTW I couldn't get DVDrebuilder to work under Linux (even with Wine) so I use it with my VirtualBox WinXP Pro SP3 install. Works fine for me that way. This past week I did a back-up of my Sweeney Todd DVD (Tim Burton's film).

Yeah I do use rebuilder often but for some movies (like my kids movies) I use shrink. I also use vobblanker to remove unwanted stuff when doing a full backup. Never used menu edit though. Have to look at that. I'll tell ya though, after seeing the difference from my tv to the HD one at my in-laws I will definatly start using DVDRB with HC solely from now on.
BTW for your rebuilder wine problem see this thread. I was also having problems using rebuilder with wine but after copying OLEAUT32.dll from my windows partition to my linux wine /home/your_user_name/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32 directory Rebuilder worked fine.
edit- this worked great for the freeware version of dvdrb. I think the pro version worked until like version 1.26 then something broke. There are some posts in the linux forum of doom9 relating to dvdrb and wine.Donadagohvi (Cherokee for "Until we meet again") -
If quality is a concern use DL media for your backups:
SL media=.40
DL media=$1.50
Not having to lose any quality because of reencoding=Priceless -

One thing about an HDTV ... it looks beautiful when you are playing back a high quality source but boy oh boy does it make a not-so-good source look like shit. I can understand why LordSmurf stuck with an EDTV (852x480) for as long as he did (he has ranted on this several times). I do recall him saying somewhat recently in one thread that he now has a 720p or 1080i/p HDTV.
However once you see Blu-Ray on a large screen HDTV (I have a 51" 16x9 HDTV) there is no going back. Plus my PS3 games look awesome and the last time I popped in a PS2 game I found the graphics to be "grating" to my senses LOL
Thankfully the PS3 does a kick ass job of upscaling regular DVD but still if the regular DVD is poorly encoded even the upscaling cannot hide it and even the best VHS to DVD looks like ass.
Hell even most of my Comcast cable stations (the non HDD channels) look like ass due to the heavy compression artifacts.

Yeah I really need to spend the $30 bucks for a new burner so that I can burn DL.
I'm the kind of guy who has a hard time replacing something unless it's broke though (no matter how cheap). Personality quirk of mine. I'm cheap!Donadagohvi (Cherokee for "Until we meet again") -

Just curious, but did you play back any commercial DVDs or high def discs on that same 42" set? I assume you did a comparison, but otherwise, maybe that 42" wasn't set up properly. BTW, I use a video projector and a fairly large screen. I do notice some softening of the picture with Shrink conversions.
-
No not a commercial disc but I did play an HC encoded disc and it looked good. Perhaps just too much compression was used for Cars for it to look good. I honestly don't rember. Been a while since I ripped it.

You know this is funny ... it just "hit me" that the last time I was at CIRCUIT CITY they had CARS playing via Blu-Ray on a big flat LCD and I was utterly surprised at the quality of the image and the detail inherit in it. I was really blown away. Made me want to rent the movie to see if my HDTV is as good or maybe I am still just not accustomed to how awesome Blu-Ray can be. To date I've seen very few movies in Blu-Ray on my own set-up due to lack of choice and I've yet to see any animation ... CARS isn't exactly my cup of tea but OH MY GOD it looked so good LOL
The thing that impressed me was that it was a desert scene and there were these "vista like" shots of the desert stretching off into the distance and you could see SO much detail in all of that. Really effin amazing!

The price difference between .33-1.50 isn't much if I want a perfect copy in 30min(rip to burn).
I agree that Cars looks great in SD,I can only imagine what it looks like in HD. -
I had problem with second layer on this 2.4x Verbatim disc. Got 8x made in Singapore and no more trouble.
-
The 'Happy Feet' Blu-Ray DVD is one of the most impressive animations I've seen in that format. The detail in the penguins feathers is amazing compared to the SD version.
-
The thing that I find amazing is that the guy who directed HAPPY FEET is the same guy that directed the MAD MAX trilogy. Then again he also directed BABE.
Strange world huh?
Probably the strangest mix is this one: The same guy that directed PORKY'S also directed A CHRISTMAS STORY ("You'll shoot your eye out, kid.")
Tis a strange world we live in.

Great movie. I had never seen it but love Jack The Ripper stuff so my gf at the time bought it for me when it came out. I'm glad she did.

I just cought this topic and it struck a nerve. So, I wanna add my comment and things..
( Porky's was, is, and always will be special. It was the movie that set the standard in crude
porn of its time -- plus, its one of my favorites. I have both Porkys I, and Porkys II, though
my trilogy is incomplete because I can't find III'rd around in any stores, yet. )
I've always had the feeling that when it comes to "HD" tv sets that they are vary in their respective
(hd featured) performance. There are many areas that these sets can fail a given performance run
(in your case freebird73717 though not a test, was more or less a coensidental one at that) and
I would say these "flaws in performance" range relate to how each design were built to produce a
certain outcome. They can be: Noise Reduction; UpSampling/DownSampling; Chroma performances;
Mechanics of the Resize algos; on-board decoder and processor of the fed in video source i.e., dvd
mpeg-2 sources, etc., and so on.
freebird73717, I was wondering if you could perform another test run on that tv set you had the
unfortunate truth unfold before you .. if you could run that *same* re-encoded video/movie source you
used but this time re-encode it with a CBR and High Bitrate setup, and don't use 2-pass, nor VBR.
Just re-encode as pure CBR and something like 9800 bitrate and maybe 224 or 384 audio bitrate.
Then, run it through that tv set and see if it looks and performs the same as your first re-encode
or note any *better* Quality or not.
--> This could be a SIZE MATTERS issue when it comes to certain size (hd) tv's
What I'm after here is to see if the reasons/clues are that (and more) mentioned above. This might
help lead us to the cause of the problem(s) and we might find ways around it in certain video re-encode
projects and things. For instance, when the target tv is 42", plasma, we know that need to do the
process a little different, etc etc for various hd tv set types and sizes, oh my..
Thank you,
-vhelp 4711 -
When I get the opportunity to test some more I will. I only go to my in-laws house about twice a month so it might be a while.
I'll try to play a commercial disc and see if any difference
Then I'll re-encode two pass with hcenc
Then I'll re-encode cbr with tmpgenc since hc doesn't do a true cbr.
We'll see what happens in a couple of weeks or so when I go back.Donadagohvi (Cherokee for "Until we meet again")
