I've had to rebuild my PC & in the process must have lost the correct codecs to playback AVi using WMP11.
I am using WMP 11 as I want to stream to my XBOX.

OK, I get the SAME symptoms no matter what CODEC pack I use. The symptoms are as follows.

    1. I can here sound, but no video

    2. The cpu starts to run at 100%

    3. I am then unable to stop WMP 11 or use any other applications so I must reboot the PC.

the codecs I have used are as follows & I have made sure I have uninstalled them before trying another.

    k-lite 3.9,
    The Codecs 8.2 build 7,
    Theorica Codecs 5.0,
    Xvid-1.1.3-12042008,
    XviD-1.1.3-28062007.exe,
    ffdshow_beta4a_rev1723_20071224,
    Xvid-1.1.3-12042008

I HAVE USED G-SPOT TO SEE WHAT CODECS ARE NEEDED & IT SAYS THEY ARE INSTALLED.

HOWEVER NO MATTER WHAT CODEC PACK I USE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS, EVEN WITH USING mpc SUPPLIED WITH K-LITE PACK. HAVE ALSO REINSTALLED WMP11

PLEASE HELP, I'M NOW DESPERATE, THANKS IN ADVANCE...

oops, another codec pack victim. re-format and start over. this time repeat the mantra until it sticks. never, ever install a codec pack.

Does this look like my only option?

If I have to do this, then which codes should I then install ?

I would just install koepis xvid codec and ac3 filter. And then if you can't play video use gspot to identify what codec you need and just install that one. It might also work with ffdshow as decoder for most formats but it could also cause problems for some few.

First guess, I would suspect directx.

Run dxdiag from The Start menu and see if everything is active and not grayed out ie... display acceleration

I would tend to agree that it is a DirectX problem caused by the codec packs (never found dxdiag to report an error even when one clearly exists). You could try reregistering the quartz.dll to see if that will help "Start>Run>regsvr32 quartz.dll", otherwise you may have to follow aedipuss's suggestion and reinstall Windows.
