    my friend has a series 2 and is planing on getting rid of it so i might take it, now my question is would i be able to record tv shows on it without subscribing and also hook up my video game system to it to record game play?

    I may be mistaken, but I believe the recording functions are tied to the guide system which only works when you subscribe. As for your game question, they don't work like VCR's and won't record video from external inputs, they only record from the internal tuners.
