Weird I don't have XviD or DivX codec installed but I can see Xvid movies

Hi,

I'm doing a new installation in my new PC. I haven't yet installed the xvid codec and yet I can see Xvid movies.

I have the MMCompView program that displays all the codecs but I can't find the codec that is decoding my xvid avis.

I have Windows Media Player 10 and Powerdvd 7.3.3319a installed. I see that this last one has two divx decoder filters in MMCompView, but after uninstalling them I still can see my xvid avis.

I´m just curious to know which is the codec that is working now, and also I don't like very much having codecs in my computer without knowing them.

I use Gspot most times to check codecs. You can find out exactly what is decoding the file by using the 'Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests' to the lower left on the program window. On this computer, ffdshow is doing the decoding, although I have Divx and Xvid installed.

That's a copy of what GSpot v2.70a says:

I don't know how to interpret it. I think it says there's a Divx Decoder but I don't installed any. I mean I saw there was one installed with Powerdvd but I unistalled it with MMCompView

Move your mouse over in G-spot over the (DivX Decoder Filter). It tells you the name of the decoder. Then search for it in Explorer - you know how _bad_ many programs handle their uninstall. In your case that´s even fine...

PowerDvd installs mpeg2, divx, h264, ac3 decoder etc. I know many people who just install the latest PowerDvd in Trial Mode, copying then the needed codecs to a safe place and uninstall PowerDvd.
Re-register the codecs and you´re done.

Thank you. I did waht you said and I read: DXdec.ax

I found it in Program files\Cyberlink\PowerDVD\VideoFilter.

I can't delete it, but I hope that when I install the Xvid codec, this other one don't interfere.

Anyway, I think I'm going to look for a way to unistall it. I don't know how for the moment.
