  1. i am encoding an hdmovie with ripbot to mkv with settings of 1280x720 to 23.973 to about 7 gigs. it takes 2 to 3 hours for the first pass then anywhere from 8 to 10 hours for the second pass. is there anyway to speed this process up without getting a quadcore computer. iam running a hp with 6400 dualcore processor and four gigs of ram with onboard video i have the ffdshow and hali installed and the klite and cccp installed. would a more powerful video card help out with encoding. thanks for your help.

Set it for CQ, which will be 1 pass. Tough to gauge output size, though.

I don't know RipBot but if it is using a high motion estimation setting selecting a lower one may cut your encoding time in half. With CQ encoding the file will turn out a little bigger (5% maybe, depends on the particular video). With 2-pass VBR it will be the same size but a little lower in quality.

If you're talking about the computer being hard to use (laggy) while encoding, try setting RipBot's priority lower with Task Manager.
