Do you shoot video directly in mpeg4 formats?

So do you record video directly to mpeg4 derivitives using a point and shoot digital camera or a camcorder?

Or do you prefer to go the conversion route and actually use dedicated equipment for dv or other tape/digital recording equipment?

I have an old 2.1mp SOny camera that has a movie mode with no sound picup. I can't even remember what format it records in its been so long since I've used the video mode.

Personally I prefer to use dedicated equipment. A true still camera for photos and a genuine video camera for video. How about you?

mpeg 4?? Surely there are only 2 real formats, DV and DVD compliant mpeg 2?

I've got a Canon S5 IS digital camera I picked up before I went off to London and Paris about a month ago, and I absolutely love the video mode on that puppy. I shot over an hour of video (in smaller clips) on a couple of 8gb SD cards and the quality is quite good; the S5 has built-in stereo mics which at first I thought were just a gimmick, but you can get really decent sound from those.

Is it a replacement for a DV camcorder? Not per se, but frankly I would never have dragged a DV camcorder and other camera with me, I just wanted a good digital camera, and the video abilities of the S5 were really useful and really convenient.

So I don't think it's an either/or situation, it depends on your ... situation.
