Hi - I have no problems in adding my AAC audio to my h.264 .mp4 files created using meGUI. But I don't know how to also add the AC3 audio. I've heard people say that the .mp4 container doesnt support AC3 - when I use Handbrake (for normal DVD source encodes) it creates an .m4v container which includes AC3 and AAC audio (for playback on my AppleTV). But how do I add the AC3 audio into my h.264 encodes from Blu-ray? (I need them to playback on AppleTV so I 'think' the container has to either be .mp4 or .m4v)

    Thanks for any help..

AC3 isn't completely compatible in .mp4 container. Sometimes it works, more often you get playback problems

If you want to "force" it in, you can use YAMB, or the mp4 muxer in MeGUI.

I would convert to AAC instead, which is definitely compatible with .mp4 and AppleTV.

I believe they're right...If you use XviD4PSP,it has an apple TV output format, .mp4 with AAC audio

If this is for playback on a computer or a Sony PS3 then you can use the M2TS container format. This allows for H.264 video with AC-3 audio and will play back on a computer as well as a Sony PS3 but sorry no XboX 360 playback with this container format.

M2TS is probably a better choice than MP4 for those with a Sony PS3 since you can use the original AC-3 audio ... assuming your source has AC-3 audio.

this is for an APPle Tv

I tried to encode it to AAC format - 160 kbps keep original channels ND-AAC-LC- MultiChannel 192kbps - adaptive bitrate @ 160 kbits/s muxed into an Mp4

Itunes does not accept the file. I-tunes accepts the video stream completely but once I mux the AC3 or AAC file same pushed down to 160 kbps Itunes does not accept it.

btw I think Xvid4PSP encodes it in Pro Logic 2 the same with MovieStyle by TMPGENC if it encodes it into a multichannel ac3 or AAC file then i'm golden ... I hope

Like I said every thing was said above I'm having the exact same problem as Samgood. Handbrake creates a m4v file w/ ac3 audio and it works perfectly on Itunes and Apple Tv

I then try and take a video file that works in Itunes and create a ac3 file with what I thought was the same format as handbrake and Itunes does not allow me to import.

I have a solution for the xbox 360 and PS3 I'm concerned only with AppleTV

    Thanks

I believe the lack of response here is that nobody gives a shit about the AppleTV device.

Most people worried about playing Hi-Def video files are doing so via the Sony PS3 or the Microsoft XboX or perhaps a computer (a HTPC hooked up to a TV being the "best" option as it is very flexible when it comes to what formats you can play).

They are right. Look up the official MP4 specs to confirm this if you must. Is easy enough to do. This is the reason I went with MKV as container of choice for my HTPC - H.264 (x264) and AC3 DD5.1+ wrapped neatly in MKV.

MKV container is useless with Apple TV. Whether or not you like Apple TV is not the discussion here. The M4V container can contain AC3 audio because I download files from apple with it in them. I simply haven't found a way to mux ac3 into the container myself. Any help doing this would be appreciated. If you want to rant about Apple TV or talk about "superior" containers I'm really not interested. Thanks.

I recall that Apple adding AC3 audio and AAC audio to video files was a non-standard implementation.

I too have an Apple TV and now looking to rip and convert blu-ray discs so I can play on my Apple TV. As much as I love the Apple TV, there is still so much room for improvement.

I recently installed Boxee (based on XBMC) on my Apple TV and love it (dead simple install and very polished interface). I loose the iTunes syncing but gain so much more like more container support (such as MKV) and codecs (like DivX). I like the Boxee interface so much more and am able to mount network drives and stream from UPnP sources. I've just added an inexpensive D-Link DNS-323 network attached storage (NAS) device to my network (these seem to be on sale at all the big box retailers right now). Out of the box this NAS includes SMB and FTP file server, UPnP AV server, iTunes server and bit torrent client. I've just updated the NAS so it uses Transmission as my bit torrent client and intended to update a few more features.

All I need to figure out now is ripping Blu-ray content. In the meantime, stuff I download plays flawlessly w/Boxee.

I'm having the exact same problem with BRD and HDDVD's that I've ripped. If I run them through Ripbot264, I get Dolby Pro Logic II on playback. I thought the answer was to run the H.264 and E-AC3 files through TSMuxer and downconvert the E-AC to AC3 but that option is greyed out in TSMuxer. Anyone know why TSMuxer would refuse to downconvert. I've read about a 1,000 forum posts and I'm about to pull my hair out.
