Video Monitoring Problem (mplayer, no controls)

Hi. Got a problem here. Never used this ffmpegX before so just getting the hang of it. Problem is when I use 'play' it chooses to launch mplayer which is irritating because this Unix executable file has no basic controls (play / stop / pause / fastf / b, etc). I have to sit through everything waiting to check subtitle synchs / edits and other such stuff - that, without being able to fast forward or whatever is just one big pain anywhere u like. I have 'Mplayer OSX', the normal media player, installed in my applications folder with all the controls but ffmpegx ignores its existence and there's no preference options - no way you can choose the player as default - as you can in other similar apps which require monitoring video and subs (Jubler/Submerge/ Sears etc). Any help most welcome - Oh and by the way, hi to everybody, I'm new round here.

Mplayer does not have a controller window like most GUI player apps, but it does have basic controls by use of the keyboard:
mplayer basic keys

WOW! Fast answer. Thanx a lot. Actually I did bang around on the keys to see if anything happened - wrong keys i guess. Excuse my ignorance but what key is 'pgdown/up' ? Some of the keys don't do what they say they do but I guess it's just because of the kb I have (using a spanish keyboard layout) as I've found some functions do work on alternative keys - I'll work the rest out out. Anyway - big thanx for the answer and welcome - guess I'll probably be back, this video lark can get quite complicated at times.

'Page Up' and 'Page Down', sometimes with up/down arrows that have a double horizontal line through it.
