Sony Vegas Pro 8 Capture in 16.9

Hello to All

I have a Sony Handycam HC96E which I'am to believe records in true 16.9 my problem is whenever i capture it using Sony Vegas Pro 8 it doesn't seem to to capture in 16.9 (it captures 4.3 I really don't want to convert from 4.3 to 16.9) although when i was using Picture Package that came with the camera it does, I have been searching the net for days trying to nut this out but to no avail any help would be much appreciated or a link to a tutorial basically is there a way to mirror the 16.9 ex handycam to capture with Vegas.

Yes the camera has it on the lcd screen display 16.9. (in record & replay)

there's an option in preferences to point to an external capture program...you could set it to cap using Picture Package

Just because you don't see black bars in your Vegas window doesn't mean your footage is not 16:9. It won't really matter until you render your video and use the proper settings for your video to display as it should. If it was shot in 16:9 vegas is capturing it the same way. It just might not look like it in the preview window.

is it true 16/9 or 4:3 with encoded black bars top and bottom? there is a difference in the way you need to treat them in vegas. if it's true 16/9 import it and then right click on the video and select properties and down at the bottom click the down arrow next to pixel properties and change it to DV widescreen(ntsc or pal).

When capture with Picture Package I have black bars top & bottom .
When captured with Vegas I have black bars on the sides.
RE: stantheman1976 do you loss any picture Quality whilst rendering.

ben17 - it is a miniDV cam, right? try capturing with winDV and then import the DVavi file into vegas and set the file properties.

Yes it is a Mini DV tried windv yesterday it said that no dv connected so don't know what was happening there.

you are using a firewire connection, right? hook up the cam to computer, turn it on, switch to "play/edit' mode and then start winDV.

USB is only for still picture transfer. get a firewire card and cable to transfer DVavi from the cam. they're cheap. check newegg.com

Ok I am lookng into it, could this be the cause of my initial problems.

It could be. I've never transferred by USB and it's not the ideal method. Firewire does a direct transfer of 0's and 1's so you get a bit for bit copy of what's on the tape in whatever format it is. Almost every computer today has a firewire port and cab;es are cheap. You can get a $5 cable off ebay. Your camera will have a 4 pin connector and your PC should have a 6 pin connector. Laptops (at least any I've seen) will have a 4 pin connector.

Yes my camera port has a DV in/out i.link interface (ieee1394 4-pin connector s100) I'am currently looking into a firewire card one that will be conpatable with my comp as it is 4 years old I don't know if this will be an issue or not.

shouldn't be any problem adding a firewire card as long as you have an open pci slot on your motherboard. windows xp includes the driver and will install it without any help. they start at under $20 delivered at newegg.com, the cheap ones work fine, i've installed several.

Quite a few newer cameras can transfer full DV via USB2, however you have to install the drivers that came with the camera to do this.

Yes I have installed all the drivers however I have just brought a firewire card from ebay just after a cable now so I will see how this pans out.
