Hmm, well, so many mis-informations and contradictions I don't even know where to start.

You're argument that upconverting DVD to HD res makes it look worse, yet watching it on a computer screen is great. Wonder what res that computer screen is displaying at

A good quality upscaling DVD player does have a hardware upscaler that helps the image quality.

I haven't played a 480i DVD for years. They are all 480p here recently.

Sounds like your settings are misconfigured, equipment mismatch, not hooked up correctly, or poor quality equipment. 1360x768 is NOT HD. 1920x1080 is HD. If your TV doesn't support the correct resolution or HDCP, the DVD player will output 480i/p. If your DVD player isn't set up correctly, it will output 480i/p. Check your settings and TV capabilities.

Then you go on to say that UPSCALING the image to 1360x768 with the PC to TV looks better than a standard DVD player. AND this upscaled image is on par with an upscaling DVD player.
Watching standard DVD's on your computer and LCD monitor looks much better then watching DVD's on a standard DVD player on an HDTV.
    ----
Watch a DVD through the computer, making sure the output resolution is set to your TV's native resolution, 1360x768

using an upconverting DVD player with your HDTV will look about the same as using your PC & monitor.
What I gather from your post. An upscaling DVD player looks as good as the upscaled output from a PC. You don't have a true HD TV. Your TV isn't setup correctly. Your DVD player may not be the best.
Linux _is_ user-friendly. It is not ignorant-friendly and idiot-friendly.
