I was wondering if there was a easy/fast way to change the avc profile of a h264 and/or its audio to meet ps3 playback spec.

I know avc has to be 4.1 but is it my audio that is the issue and thus why my ps3 won't playback the file after trans-coding it to mp4? Could it be that the bitrate mode is vbr?

here are some of the details

  2. PS3 only supports max 3 b-frames, and cannot have b-pyramids

Download a program called avinaptic, and it will tell you lots of info like this: (You will notice I have 16 b-frames and 1 b-pyramid, (and AVC level 5.1) so this video wouldn't play on the ps3, for example)

You can change some of the parameters with h264info, some people have had good results, some have not...Otherwise you have to re-encode

    Cheers

I've had pretty good luck using H264info and changing profile from 5.1 to 4.1, but are you playing from media or streaming the video?
    http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3media&thread.id=105692
I normally just use mkv2vob,and either burn to disk or stream to PS3....try it,that is unless HDD space is an issue for you, hence the mp4 conversion........

    Thanks for the info.

I have been trying to conduct a way not to encode videos from mkv to mp4/ts/m2ts/vob in hopes to try and do this within an hour.

I am trying to narrow down the process, especially now that i see that the ps3 now enables subtitles

    here is what I have
mkv extract audio, video, and subs
use h264 to fix video to 4.1 profile
change audio to mp4? or keep ac3?
change subs to srt uft-8 format

    mkv merge
gotsend will not accept the file for some odd reason saying its not ps3 compatible, maybe because I did not use the EXACT framerate with mkv merge which asks me for what the framerate is?
also mkvmerge has the end file extension set to mks where i go in manually to change it to mkv

going to try out vob/ts/m2ts via tsmixer and mkv2vob... anyone have any tips for me, I would like to have one of the three programs work for me now that my pc can handle video conversions again (long story).

    Thanks for your help!!!!

mkv2vob works great for me,just remember after saving as m2ts file, delete the s and use ".m2t", so PS3 can see it if streaming....or just save as vob..good luck!

Well, looks like the conversion works best with h264info profile change and making sure that your audio is ac3, dts seems to be more trouble-some

mkv2vob works best, no need to change the m2ts to m2t, still works.

just be sure to change your subs to srt utf-8 format and they will display on your ps3.

Wait how do you put subtitles in a vob file (.mpg)?

You load the sub in mkv2vob and convert to vob.

If you want to add subtitles to an already made standard vob then make a new topic because it has nothing to do with this topic.

  9. But the programm says that subtitles are supported only via transcoding, and i wish for no transcoding to take place.

Plus the guide above is for burning to avchd format. I need a file output, so that i can play with my external hard drive.

  10. Just load the subs, you don't have to burn it

Probably because your video isn't compliant. e.g. too many reference frames, b-pyramid, wrong buffer etc...

It should allow pass thru (no re-encoding) of compliant videos

If you have AVCHD compliant video material then it will not even need to be re-encoded and the whole process only takes a couple of minutes to do. On the other hand, if the video material is not standard compliant, the mkv2vob will notice this and do the whole encoding work for you automatically – it only takes substantially longer time, usually couple of hours.

My Samsung LED TV refuses to play H264 files (MKV) just by reading the profile level: if greater than 4.1 it simply won't play.
Hex editing the MKV will make the file play, but is a boring and error-prone task.

So I created H264LevelEditor, a tool to make this edit quickly.
