Pioneer DVR-112D connects but won't burn

Hi there,

Just wanted to know if anyone could help me out here, i'm having a bit of trouble installing my pioneer dvr-112d. Firstly, I am installing it externally as I have a laptop. Secondly, I am such a tight arse I did not buy an external case, instead i pulled apart an external Imation burner that i had before and put the Pioneer in there.

At first, i thought it worked, because the computer recognised the drive. But then, whenever i try to burn anything, the pioneer makes plenty of noise but nothing happens, and then whatever application i'm using stops responding. All the plugs seemed to be the same in the back of my external case to plug into the drive so i don't see what is wrong exactly. It's IDE and so was the external burner, i didn't think i needed to worry about master and slave because it's external.

So is it not possible to put a burner in another burner's case, or have i just got a faulty burner?

Any suggestions on this would be really helpful, thankyou.

Two things, it will need the jumper setting to Master because it is. If there is only one it has to be master, it can't be slave because there isn't a master for it to be slave to! Second thing, the 112 runs at UDMA 5 which, in a desktop machine, would require an 80 way IDE ribbon cable. If your external case is an older one, it may not be capable of running at that speed.

The same problem occurred with my 111D, and replacement with 80 wire cable fixed it. FYI the 112D can be cross flashed to 112L to gain auto bitsetting for SL +R media to increase playback compatibility if desired. I cross flashed my 111D to 111L for this reason, and it works very well. Be aware cross flashing does void warranty. It's a good idea to test the drive to make sure it works as it was received before cross flashing. The reason why it's not responding is not all external enclosures will work with PIONEER drives. In other words that EXTERNAL IMATION BURNER you pulled apart doesn't mean it will work with a PIONEER drive. External enclosures use different chipsets where the PIONEER drives will only work with certain chipsets. There are chipsets such as PROLIFIC & CYPRESS. So your problem exists with the EXTERNAL IMATION enclosure that you're using, there's nothing wrong with the PIONEER 112D. Buy a new EXTERNAL ENCLOSURE with the CYPRESS chipset and you should be fine. I know you're not in the USA but check out this link down below. It will give you a idea of what to look for.

The UDMA5 info is wrong, the problems are coming from creeped chipsets in enclosures, as explained by budz.

I'm having a problem with my Pioneer DVR-112 in an external enclosure as well. She's wasting an awful lot of good DVD+rs (Verbatim DL MIS and TYs).
Using ImgBurn, she'll burn some successfully and others she won't. The burn will begin and then stop and give me error messages.

Failed to Write Sectors 916512 - 916543 - Reason: No Additional Sense Information

and

Retry Failed - Reason: Invalid Address For Write

We made the purchase based upon the great reviews it received so I feel that something is out of the norm here for the one that I have.

I've tried various burn speeds and it doesn't seem to make a difference what speed I use. I've updated the firmware (official) from 1.09 to 1.24 but there is no improvement.

I'd like to try budz advice:

Buy a new EXTERNAL ENCLOSURE with the CYPRESS chipset

but I don't know how to tell what chipset an external enclosure uses.
Can someone please link me up to such an enclosure ? (I'm in the USA)

"FulciLives" just bought I think the one from mwave.com for his PIONEER 115 drive. Directron has some external drives as well. Check the huge EXTERNAL ENCLOSURE thread at CDFreaks.com as well. Buy from a reputable online retailer in case the external enclosure you purchase doesn't work with your PIONEER 112 that way you can always return it for a refund or exchange it.

Dealsonic.com has external enclosures as well but their resellersrating.com is not that great. So I'd be careful of purchasing from them.

In terms of build-quality and ruggedness, I've really liked the Coolmax line (aluminum, not plastic, with a nice fan for cooling) . . . but the ones I've seen don't pass the chipset-support test, or have the right cabling inside. I'd really like to find an enclosure that had the Coolmax virtues plus the right chipset / internal cabling. An option to support firewire or eSata would be nice too, and I'd be willing to pay extra for it.

I couldn't find any info on what kind of cabling it uses but the word "Cypress" caught my eye.
I'm assuming for the Pioneer I have, I will need to make sure to use the USB 2.0 for the Cypress?

If I can remember correctly the CYPRESS chipsets worked fine with PIONEER drives. Here's a link from Dealsonic.com on a Plumax enclosure that has the CYPRESS chipset. It does say it works with PIONEER drives.

I've never dealt with that company before so I was very hesitant to order from them. I've always had great service from Newegg but I couldn't find that one available for ordering on their site. (which is a shame because the price is certainly better!)

Sounds like this one should cover just about every desirable feature but e-Sata. (Which would be nice for an ext. HDD, but probably of little importance with a burner). Let us know how it does with the Pioneer.

I'll have to do some more burning though to see if it's consistent.

The USB 2.0 and firewire cords that they supply with the enclosure are very short. I couldn't put the enclosure where I wanted to because of that but if this works out, that's easily remedied.

I've placed order with Dealsonic 2 or 3 times that showed items were in stock only to receive email notice about a week later saying they were sorry that they were unable to obtain the item to ship. Who knows what complications may arise if one received a defective item or needed to return an item, and I no longer even try to order anything from Dealsonic.
