Hi all, my dvd writer is all of a sudden not reading/writing dvd's??

I have tried various CD's and they all work fine, the drive reads them instantly, but when I insert a dvd, it tries to read it then just stops. No matter whether it's a commercial dvd movie or a dvd data disc which I have made.

When I go to "My Computer", it asks me to insert a disc when there is already one in there.

I don't think the writer is broken as it still reads cd's ok.

Can someone please help, the writer is an LG (not sure what model, how do I find out?) and is about 6 years old.

Very tempted to buy another writer but there must be a solution to this.

    In anticipation.

CD burning/reading uses a different laser, so CDs may work, but DVDs fail if the DVD laser is dead. You could try cleaning the laser lens, but both lasers use the same lens, so not likely the problem. I would consider replacing the drive.

I suspect your DVD laser has crapped out. You'll hear it on this forum plenty: With DVD Burners being so cheap, everybody should have no problem replacing a problem drive. I'd recommend replacing a two year old drive that's bad - a six year old: In a heartbeat.

  6. Yep, DVD drive is likely bad. I'm guessing you likely burn and read a lot more DVD's than you did CD's, but even so, there's separate mechanisms in there for each media. Spend the $30-40 and get a new and improved writer over that like 4x-8x that you probably have now. I saw a Pioneer 18x at Fry's in the paper today for something like $44 with a $20 Pioneer rebate. $24 for an 18X writer is pretty decent at $44, not to mention $24.

The OP is in Australia so I don't think Fry's or Tiger Direct will help her.
