I just installed a clean XP on a reformated HD and also put in my new Radeon 3850 graphics card. I've installed the latest version of the driver, ATI Catalyst Control Centre and Hydravision and whatever program I use (WMP, Classic MP, VLC MP), I can get sound but no video. Everything else works fine with the card - world of warcraft etc...

I've tried installing the standlone divx and xvid codecs, as well as trying the k-lite codec pack but it makes no difference. I've also tried using VLC media player as I understand that it doesn't need external codecs to be installed but its the same story - blank black screen and just audio.

Are you saying there's no video when trying to playback video files w/vlc media player, windows media player, etc? It's not good to install all different codecs because it can cause conflicts with different software. Did your new graphic card come with a driver cd? Or did you just go to the Radeon website to download the latest drivers? You may wanna restore your operating system to before you installed all those video drivers and codecs. Then just install vlc and see if you get video. Just my 2 cents!

Start up two instances of VLC (or any two of the players you listed) and play a file in both. Does the second one show the picure? If so, you have a video overlay problem. It's quite common for overlay to be messed up on new installs. Go to the Nvidia Control Panel Video & Television settings.

It is likely video overlay...but this is an ATI board and isn't using nVidia control panel. There should be an equivalent in the ATI drivers.
