Rendition - New Copy Protection?

I've not seen anything like this. I normally use a simple combination of AnyDVD and VOBBlanker/DVDShrink to get my desired results, but this time, whatever they've done to this one (Rendition is the movie title), is just chewing my programs up. AnyDVD reads all kinds of protection. The fileset shows 12GB worth of files, even though only 8GB would fit on a DVD, and some of the file names are identical. I saw 3 listings for VTS_01_1.VOB I had to look at this several times to make sure my eyes weren't fooled, but there it was, so of course I couldn't do a file by file rip, or something would get overwritten. What exactly is this protection, and has it been beaten?

You have to update your version of AnyDVD to the latest version. Other forums have reported the same problem as you until they updated. I found this out for you in 1 minute with a Google search. You could have done the same yourself.

I did try that, but most results were talking about video rendering as opposed to this specific title, and I had no idea what to call this copy protection.

I have updated to v6.3.1.5, which was the most recent version as of yesterday, no newer version than that, and it did not seem to help matters as the same errors / crashes occur due to this wacky file system.

I don't think it's copy protection as such? DVDShrink is a very poor guide to the total size of files on a DVD. It takes no account of things like multi-angle options.
Try re-authoring the main movie title individually or use DvdReMake to strip the unwanted angles.

Shrink would not even attempt to read the thing. Windows explorer and DVD decrypter both reported bloated size. The trouble with ripping just the main movie off (which I'd have no problem with ordinarily) is the duplicate file names. Within the first title set, which is where the main movie is (judging by size), there are 3 files named VTS_01_1.VOB How they did this is beyond me, but obviously all 3 of these cannot be copied as one would overwrite the other, so I'm wondering if one of them is the actual movie while the other 2 are dummies.

Why not... they both have the same ripper, just the pay one is able to compress and burn, but you can do that with DVD Shrink & ImgBurn, there is nothing wrong with using DVDFab HD Decrypter to rip it and bypass the copy protection

& DVDFab Platinum is worth the extra few $$ over the plain DVDFab.

I saw this recently also on a couple different titles. Three vob 1's and two vob 2's. Cant remember what finally broke it but I think it was the AnyDVD ripper. But it sure did freak out most Apps I have. I dont remember DVDFabHD Decrypter would rip them.
It was weird seeing three vob 1's when I opened it in DVDDecrypter. and two vob 2's.
Not sure if DVDFabHDDecrypter has broke this type of code or not...yet?

Because I was trying Anydvd w/ DVDDecrypter to see if it would rip. Also DvdDecrypter is a quick & easy way to see whats on the disc. I like to try everything to see what will work and what wont. That's the fun of a hobby, finding something that is out of the norm, causing one to want to try all kinds of programs to see what's going on and how to solve the anomally.
Also I still rip 95% of all movies with DVDDecrypter. Very few I come across have the type encryption that Decrypter cant handle.

btw, funnel71 what did you find to finally break it open for you?

No, where is it and what's it for?

Back to Rendition, DVDFabHDDecrypter (latest vs.) wont work, (rips everything but movie) In fact main movie doesnt show when that option is picked to rip.DVDDecrypter & AndDVD wont work. AnyDVD Ripper seems to work. (in other words Shrink will open after anydvd rip so to shrink before write.

DvDFab people need to be contacted as this has been a problem for about a month and no fix from them. Anyone know of a contact address?

Put another way, there may be different versions of the same movie for English, French and Spanish readers and these will all register as a complete movie even though there are only tiny differences between them. So you end up with a DVD which appears to be three times the size it really is.

I used Any DVD ripper then compressed, and burned. You get the full movie without a 12 GB file, but unfortunately when you rip with AnyDCD you lose all the subtitles which are important with this movie. I am still looking for the solution so if anyone has it please respond

Just completed a backup of "Rendition" using CloneDVD2 and AnyDVD HD. Burned at maximum speed using Verbatim 16x DVD-R. Ripping drive was a Samsung SH-S202G and burned using an LG GSA-H42N. Total rip and burn time less than 13 minutes.

I used dvdfab hd decrypter ver. 4.0.6.5 without any problems. Used Shrink to open main movie with subtitles. Burned with Imgburn. Total time less than 30 minutes.

Thanks for that mrswla; nice to know that DVDFab 4.0.6.5 works as well. I think I'll try to use fab 4.0.6.5 to burn a full disc backup on on of my Verbatim +R DLs.
