TV in "Feisty"

Hi, I'm looking for a TV application for my Linux „Feisty Fawn“. I've got TVTime installed and working but it doesn't have record facility. On Windows I've got iuVCR and I'm looking for same or similar with GUI control and facility to record to various different formats. Alternatve could be to capture from TVTime with VLC but I don't know how. Mythtv is way too complicated. Can somebody help me out here, please?

I see from your profile that you have a hauppage card. While I don't have one I have been told that hauppage work well in linux. I will probably get me one soon!

Look at Xawtv as well. I used this some years ago with a BT878 card. It worked Not iuVCR by a long shot.

Being sick and tired of searching for that capture app that worked wonders with my BT8*8 cards, and my Pinnacle DC30, I bit the bullet and moved to generic DV. I use the pass through on a DV Cam, but one of the Canopus devices or ADS PyroA/V will do the same. So I paid the price for simplicity, (and need to pay more since the cam bit the dirt ). Before I made the switch I ended up using the command line to capture from my DC30, though Xawtv worked just fine, it lacked a few options that the command line provided.

Freevo has a nice live CD you can check out to see if it works for you or not.

MythTV is a god if you need an HTPC. If you only want to watch/record some TV with your desktop PC, it can be a pain to set up, and switch back and forth.

Linux is kind of a wasteland for good video capture apps. I had a Hauppage PVR-150 that just wouldn't work with anything! Xdtv is no longer under development, XawTV is crude but somewhat effective with somewhat older cards, "Zapping" should be renamed "Crashing"! Be forewarned if you are using a Hauppage card with MPEG Encoding (ie 150,250,350) then XawTV will NOT use the MPEG Encoder it will just allow you to cheat and capture in MJPEG AVI format.

I'm afraid your only hope of it functioning anything like a Windows Counterpart is to use MythTV or Freevo as suggested. There are several Distros built around MythTV like Knoppmyth, MythTVOS, MythBuntu etc. Mythbuntu can supposedly be integrated into an existing Ubuntu install, but I have never done it myself.

Like disturbed1, I gave up and bought a used Canopus ADVC-100 on ebay, at least it will work on any platform.

I installed Xdtv to try it out, it records, bad quality but......
the stupid thing disappears off the screen on fullscreen and even when I try to maximise the screen and I've tried all variations of settings. The terminal returns the following....

I gave up on Capture under windows 3 yrs ago. (Alway had to wait for capture to end to see results)

I now only capture only under linux. I use the hauppage 250 card & only record to
720x480 in MPG II format with no dropped frames. The orignal system I had the card in a was 1400AMD.
I dont use knoppmyth or any of those.

So what software do you use to record with or do you use commandline?

Its a simple 2 line script I created placed in my bin directory. When I need to record all I do is type record "some name"

I also have a cheap bt878 card for tv watching. The 2 cards play real nice together.

Heres the 2 lines:

v4l2-ctl --set-input=5 --set-fmt-video=width=720,height=480 --set-standard=ntsc
cat /dev/video > $1.mpg

I took several hours one night setting up Mythbuntu, All I wanted to do was capture/schedule from the S-Video input from my satellite box. Although Mythbuntu identified my Capture Card it never did set up and do what I wanted properly. Unless you want to use the tuner in your cap card and have all the listings info etc. on the PC, instead of letting your Cable/Satellite box do it's job than Myth TV is NOT a way to Schedule or capture.

With such support for Hauppage cards why in Linus's name is there not ONE Capture application in Linux (other than the Bt8xx/Conexxant ones that are archaic beyond belief) for simply Scheduling a Capture in the Native format of the card?

TV Time is such a great viewer, too bad it won't capture......

I'm also interested in scheduling recordings. For now I have to boot into windows to use my ati capture card. There is practically no support for ati capturing in linux. It's a shame too because this card does a bang up job in windows... It's just that I'm using windows less and less these days...

When I do get a new card I'm going to try your scripts for capturing but I also do a lot of scheduled recordings as well.

In that machine I have 2 cards a kworld 110 & the hauppage 250. I run Mandriva 2008 64 Bit I install mythtv on this machine & installed every linux Game & Video app I could find. Hooked it up to my 42" plasmas. When I need to schedule something I use mythtv. If I need to copy from a vhs tape I use the command line. It make a great pvr & game machine. As for viewing any video I have I use xine or mplayer. They both will play most videos but I find I sometime run accross a video that one or the other wont play. My main view is xine. I have less problems with it over all.
